Basic Gardening tools
A basic kit of the
most used gardening tools
To start gardening
all you need is a few basic inexpensive garden tools.
1.) A
trowel- this is a favorite among gardeners. Make sure you
buy one that feels comfortable in your hands and is made of quality
materials. One with a wooden handle and a hardened steel blade works
best. A good trowel can last for years.
2.) Weeder-
I can't tell you how many times I've pulled weeds out of my flowerbeds
with my bare hands until I found this wonderful tool. Weeding is
no longer a dreaded task. Again find one with a wooden handle and
a thin steel neck attached to a triangular steel head. This tool
comes in both right and left handed versions. You can make swift
work of weeds with this beauty.
*Hint
: Keep a few on hand to give as gifts to gardening pals.
You can make a gift basket by using a terra cotta pot (You can
stencil it or use rub on decals, a few garden tools, a pair
of gloves, some seeds, and a kneeling pad. Cover with clear
plastic wrapping paper which you can find in hobby stores (
I have even found it in dollar stores) and a nice ribbon ( plaid
wire ribbon works well). It makes a great gift for mother's
day and birthdays.
3.) Soil Knife-
This thing is great it digs, cuts and saws. It comes with either
a 6 or a 7 inch stainless steel blade with a slicing edge on one
side and a serated edge on the other for cutting roots. Its great
for digging up clumps of perennials that need to be divided and
transplanted. With the soil knife you have less mess and the job
gets done quickly.
4.) Hand
Rake- You'll be surprised how often you will use this tool.
It's great for getting into those small spaces between plants to
remove unwanted debris or diseased leaves. It also works great to
smooth out soil and mulch.
5.) Kneeling
Pad- You definately want a few of these around to save your
knees. A kneeling pad is an inexpensive investment that will also
save your back. It allows gardeners to kneel on a soft cusion rather
that bending from the waist and risking back strain. It also saves
on wear and tear on your pants and help to keep you from getting
nicks and bruises on your knees. TIP * Be
sure to buy several because they tend to disappear over the season.
Right now is a good time to buy these because many places
have begun to mark them down for the season.
