Choosing Exercise Videos

Exercise videos and DVDs provide an inexpensive, private way to exercise at home.

This form of exercising at home started in the 1980's and is still going strong because of the convenience and variety it offers. Most exercise videos cost between $10 and $25 each and you can find everything from traditional floor aerobics to kickboxing.

Before you buy an exercise video ask yourself these questions:

1.) Will this video be safe and effective?

Are the moves hi-impact or low- impact? Do I have enough room to do this video safely? How much experience does this instructor have?

2.) Is the instructor certified?

A good exercise video will list the instructors certification. The instructor should encourage you and provide alternative exercises such as low-impact or moves for people with back or neck problems. They should also begin the workout with a warm-up and end with a cool down period.

3.) How do I choose the right exercise video for me?

What are your exercise goals? To lose weight, gain flexibility, tone muscles, relieve stress or maybe a combination of any or all of these. Most exercise videos provide more than one benefit. TheFirm videos help you to lose weight while gaining beautifully toned muscles. Yoga tapes can also tone muscles and help relieve stress. So choose videos based on your goals and fitness level. It's a good idea to have a variety of exercise videos to prevent boredom and increase fitness by using different muscle groups in different ways. When deciding to purchase an exercise video read the description on the back. It should tell you the fitness level from beginner to advanced, a description of the workout, the instructor's fitness background, and the length of the workout. I like it when they break the time down into warm-up, workout, and cool-down.

Walking workouts are great because they incorporate easy moves and require very little equiptment or space to do. Leslie Sansone's popular "Walk Away the Pounds" videos let you walk your way to fitness indoors, away from rain and traffic. Choose 1, 2, 3 mile routines, or all 3.
