Vitamin B1 is needed for energy production especially in the muscles, including the muscles of the heart. B1 vitamins are needed to maintain a healthy nervous system by combating disorders of the nerves, such as neuritis. People low in vitamin B1 may suffer from depression and have trouble with memory and learning. Vitamin B1 may also play a part in protecting the body from developing arthritis. It is an essential vitamin for children to ensure normal growth, likewise for fertility in adults. Vitamin B1 is also thought to protect against the development of cataracts in older people.

Some good food sources for Vitamin B1 are whole grains and whole grain products.
