Organizing your laundry

Most people don't enjoy doing laundry but it's one of those neccessary task we all must do. So to make it more enjoyable create a space that is organized in such a way that you can get in, do what you have to do, and get out.

Step 1: Make sure you have the things you need to do laundry in your laundry area, such as laundry detergent, dryer sheets, stain remover. You should not have to travel to another section of your house to get these items, they should be easily accessible in you laundry area. These items can be stored on a shelf above or next to your washer, in pull out drawers, cabinets or in baskets. They just need a home, some place to go besides the floor where you may trip on them or spill them.

Step 2: Have a sorting system. This can be 3 baskets, one for darks, one for lights and one for everything else or a large laundry storage unit with three compartments. Having you laundry in three catagories will make it easier to keep up because you will be able to throw a load of laundry into the washer quicker because you don't have to stop and sort.

Step 3:  Have several clothes baskets to put each family members clothes in and send to their bedroom to be put away.  You will also need a good supply of clothes hangers and a place to hang clothes that need to be hung up.  *One key element to keeping up with laundry is having the space to  put the clean clothes away. If your drawers and closets are too full you will be more likely to let the clean clothes pile up. If this is the case you need to take everything out and only put back the items that you and your family really love and wear and see how much room you have left. Store clothing that are out of season or still too big for your kids in a labeled storage container in the closet (if you have the space) under the bed (try spacebags) or in the basement or garage.  Buying kids clothes when they are on sale is a great way to save money when you have the money to pay for them (not credit) and have the space to store them.

*More Laundry Tips*

  1. Keep a small basket in your laundry room next to your washer for the small items that you find inside pockets, that way they also stay together and its easier to return them to where they belong.
  2. Have a trashcan in your laundry area for dryer sheets and other items that you may find in pockets.
  3. If possible have a table in your laundry area to fold clothes.
  4. Keep 2 extra baskets in your laundry room, one for socks and the other for underwear.
