Tips on how to begin teaching your children to cook

One of the most important things that we do as parents is to prepare our children to be adults. This requires teaching them how to take care of themselves. Learning to cook is an important skill that they will use their entire life. Starting at a very young age most children want to help prepare meals.

A great job for a two year old is tearing lettuce or breaking up broccoli, carrots or cauliflower for snacks. They also like to dip their own fruits and vegtables in yogurt dip or ranch dressing.

When my daughter was three I measured the ingredients and allowed her to pour them in the mixing bowl. She really felt like she was a big girl and helping mommy cook. At this age she could also wrap dough around hotdogs for pigs-in-a blanket. At times I also let her mix things with a wooden spoon while I held the bowl.

Now that my daughter is nine she grates cheese and even cracks eggs into measuring cup( to make sure that no shells get in) then pours them into the mixture. I allow her to stir scrambled eggs and flip the grilled cheese sandwiches. Cooking with your kids is also a great way to work on their math skills. I ask her "How many people are eating breakfast this morning? and how many eggs will each person eat? This can either become an addition problem or a multiplication problem. This teaches children problem solving skills that they can use to figure out word problems and even life problems ( such as, how much should I cook so that everyone has enough to eat but I'm not wasteing food). She loves to help me in the kitchen and at this point because of the trainning she has received since she was two, she's really helping.
