Gardening doesn’t end
after the growing season, prepare to give your gardens
a little extra attention this fall and you’ll
see them thrive in the spring. Here are a few tips
that will help.
- To protect perennials
from harsh winters, cover beds with landscape cloth.
The landscape cloth allows moisture and air to go
through while still protecting plants. Because it
blocks light, remove it as soon as plants start
growing in the spring.
-
To enjoy vine ripen tomatoes longer,
when you hear that frost is on the way, pull up
tomato plants with the fruit still on them. Hang
the plants upside-down over the garage rafters.
This way the tomatoes will continue to ripen for
quite some time.
- Before frost pick all of your cherry tomatoes
and pack them in egg cartons (one in each hole).
This way the tomatoes don’t touch each other,
they’re in a dark place but easy to get to.
- Microclimates are
areas that can exist around your home and remain
warmer than the exposed areas. The help provide
safe havens for tender plants. Some of the best
examples of microclimates in your yard are south
and west facing sheltered locations close to your
house foundation, rock walls that retain heat from
the sun, and the area above your septic tank.
- Place collected seeds in plastic 35 mm film containers.
They are airtight, unbreakable and just the right
size for tiny seeds
- Don’t throw away your sunflowers stalks.
You can save them in a dry location for next year’s
garden. They make sturdy beanpoles, flower stakes
or trellises. Their natural look blends in with
any garden.
- To make your soil rich and ready for spring planting
in the fall cut your healthy pest-free annual flowers
with a mulching mower and till everything into the
soil.
- To save marigold seeds
After the first frost pull up a few plants to dry.
To identify the color clip a clothespin to a stem
and write the color of the plant with a permanent
marker. When you gather the dried seeds clip the
clothespins to the containers they’re stored
in
- Before putting away garden tools for the season
wash them with soap and water to disinfect them.
Then apply a light coat of oil.
- In the fall when you clean out the garden apply
generous amounts of compost and till it into the
soil
- Instead of raking up fall leaves, use your lawn
mower with a bagger to pick them up. This chops
them into fine pieces which makes excellent mulch
for your garden.

- Fall fun for Kids
While pumpkins are small carefully write the name
of each child in the skin with a sharp pencil, as
the pumpkin grows, so the name. It doesn’t
hurt the pumpkin and children of all ages enjoy
seeing their name grow bigger and bigger.
