Gardening tips The "Nikko Blue" hardy hydrangea
The name hydrangea came from two Greek words: hydor, meaning "water," and angeon, meaning "vessel." The vase-shaped seedpods of hydrangea resemble water vessels, therefore the name fits. The "Nikko Blue" hardy hydrangea's common name is mophead hydrangea and it is a part of the plant group Hortensia hydrangea. The "Nikko Blue" hardy hydrangea will grow to be about chest height but can grow to be 6 feet tall. It grows well in parial sun or shade and produces a mound of Wedgewood-blue blooms almost 12 inches across in the very first year. The "Nikko Blue" hardy hydragea is also very heat and drought tolerant and will bloom midsummer (it actually blooms from June to August) when other flowering shrubs are scarce. It has spectacular foundation and specimen plantings and is hardy to 20 below zero. It grows well in bare, shady spots along the north side of the house. It's also a natural soil tester. To test this, plant some Blue Hydrangeas among your acid-loving plants. If the blooms are a nice blue the soil is acid enough. If blooms start turning pink add some Ferrous Sulfate to the soil. The "Nikko Blue" hardy hydrangea is recommended for hardiness zones 4-10. The best time to plant them is in the spring or fall..
